Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

saving to WAV file

Post by web » Tue Dec 27, 2011 10:20 pm

I have been using Audacity beta for a few years. It does okay for multiple tracks and after the mix, i play it back through Audacity and it sounds good, pretty much like i recorded it. Then I export it and save to a WAV file. When I play it back through the same speakers, the quality is not the same. there is some distortion and some of the levels are off. Any clues?

If you restart Audacity and then Import the WAV file back into Audacity, does it play correctly without distortion?

I just imported it back to audacity and it plays horribly, basically just a lot of noise and buzzing

Let's start at the beginning. Which exact version of Audacity are you using (look in the Help menu > About Audacity)
Please give the full version description (for example 1.3.15-alpha-Dec 21 2011 Unicode)

Which version of Windows?

Are you able to record a single audio track, export it as a WAV file and then play that exported file with Windows Media Player?

I am using Audacity 1.3 Beta Unicode. I usually record a song with 2-10 mono tracks and do a final mix. Then I mix and render them, which usually ends up being 2 identical tracks. Then I export, and save as a WAV file, which is later burned on to a CD or just played through Windows media Player. The playback or CD never sounds as clear as the original and some of the levels of the instruments are off (like more guitar in the mix than I originally had etc.) If I play a "real" song (professionally recorded) through the same computer with a WAV file with same speakers, it sounds fine. I'm stumped.

If Help > About Audacity says ".inc" then you did not get it from us.

Are you still using WAV (Microsoft) signed 16-bit PCM for exports? Still using 44100 Hz project rate (look bottom left of the Audacity window)?

Are you up for trimming one of your mixes to a few seconds, saving as an Audacity project (.aup file and _data folder, making sure any files are copied in at File > Check Dependencies) then export a WAV for comparison? Here are some places you could upload to (zip the WAV and project into one folder):

http://www.megaupload.com

I think you lost me. When I'm done mixing, I hit save project. Then i reopen it and save it as a mix, which I then render all the tracks down to one, or two stereo. then I hit export and save it as a WAV file. Is there more i should be doing?
