Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

why does Audacity start playing when I type keyboard?

Post by health-intuitive » Fri Oct 21, 2011 10:52 pm

:( After the usual learning curve I got Audacity working on Win 7 pretty good. Due to hardware, I now am with an Imac 4.1 with OSX 10.6.8. Now a whole host of entirely different weird problems with Audacity and Lame.

The only one I can't solve is why Audacity is idle, when I start to type on the keyboard it begins playing the opened audio file without me requesting this.

I hve turned OFF every keyboard shortcut in OSX but have not restarted. I have done Apple software update today, no change. Same problem. I cannot type with Audacity open without it playing.

Which keystrokes are doing this is somewhat mysterious as well.

Anyone else have this or know what this problem is called?

PS: I strongly recommend you abandon earlier verions of both Audacity and Lame and try to herd users towards only the last few releases. At least put older distributions on a different page, like Apple does. The only way i could get Lame to convert wav to mp3 was to download and install all five of them. I have no idea which one is really working. :)

Yes, we've been saying that -- strongly -- for a very long time. The problem is complex, but it revolves around the Release and Beta versions of the software. Audacity 1.3.13 is a Beta release and it will never in its current form, be advanced to release version.

The next Release Version, as everything in Audacity Land, is produced by volunteers all doing other things for their day jobs.

You have all the symptoms of using Audacity 1.2 on a modern Mac. Very Bad Idea. You should try trashing your configuration file and restart Audacity. Also go for the INFO panel and see which Audacity you do have. Audacity 1.3.13 is the current one and very stable on new machines.

If you have the wrong version, get the new one from here, Only! There should only be one version of lame and FFMpeg at this download site.

Close Audacity.

Clean out and trash the old Audacity from /Applications.

Trash the configuration file.

Go > Home > Library > audacity > audacity.cfg (trash this file)

Install and run Audacity 1.3.13.

That's a little scrambled. I have a presentation in a few minutes.

In my day job.
