Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Can't sem to get anything but a flat line...

Post by archiprosody » Mon Oct 17, 2011 1:33 am

Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 64-bit
HP Media Center PC
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU 2.4GHz
4GB RAM

Audacity 1.3.13 beta
I'm trying to record audio from the computer's playback.
As in, whatever you would hear through the speakers, music, programs, windows warnings, etc.
I looked into some similar problems and postings here, but haven't been able to resolve it.

I've tried seemingly every setting but I only get either:
• flat line, no audio, moving cursor
• stationary, pulsing/flashing cursor

Can anyone help? Thanks!

You have to make Windows do it first. Audacity will record anything presented to it. Vista and Win7 made this particularly difficult.

Have you tried various Audio HOst settings? I had a flat line until I adjusted this option from the default.

I'm running Vista Home and still can't figure this one out... it's like the instructions in the above links are either missing steps or there are not direct correlations with the menus I am told to browse through in Audacity...

Can anyone who runs Vista PLEASE post step-by-step instructions on how to get something other than a flat-line for recording audio?

I got Audacity to work on another machine by enabling the system audio as an input source in Windows' settings... the same will not work here, for Vista. Help!

You have to look in the Windows Control Panel first to show and enable all the disabled inputs of the sound device. Instructions to do that were in the link you were given:
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php? ... es#vistacp

Quit Audacity and do steps 1 - 4 as above in the "Recording" tab of Sound. After doing 1 - 4, ALT + PrtScr to copy an image of the "Recording" tab, open Paint, Paste, save as PNG and upload the PNG image to your reply here. You can do that using "Upload attachment" underneath where you post.
