Mic Volume issue (Windows 7)

I've browsed the boards and didn't find a solution, and I've never run into the problem before. I had recorded two vocal files (rap verse and overdubs) over an instrumental which went fine as always over the last 2 years of using audacity. All of a sudden I try to record another verse and the volume is significantly lower. I am using an APEX 440 condensor mic and haven't run into the problem before. I went through all the settings I found in the control panel that have been described from the "sound" settings, I've looked around in audacity itself and found nothing. This is the first time I run audacity on Windows 7, I used to have it on XP and never had issues. Anyone have an idea on why my volume would be lowered randomly?

Also on the "Communications" tab of "Sound" in the Windows Control Panel, what is the setting for adjusting sound levels? Although it is "believed" that setting only affects playback (or recording of playback), we recommend setting it to "Do nothing" unless you want to make and receive telephone calls on the machine.
