I am using OS 10.4.11- Last time I used the ION turntable was a couple of months ago, and it was just fine. Today, I plugged it in and when I try to record, I get loud screeching feed back- no music from the turntable. Selection is "Default Input Source" with no other choices. I don't remember if it was that way before, I just would plug it in and record.
Tried switching USB plugs, with the hub, without the hub. No difference. I see in some threads that perhaps it just decided not to work anymore, or maybe it's an issue with the several updates that have come through since the last time. One of the solutions offered was to connect it directly with analog. How would one do that? My G5 is the "all-in one"
Anyway- I guess my real question is: Is there a way to change the "default input source" or should I even do that?

Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.
Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

You very carefully avoided telling us which Mac you have.
PowerBooks are all in one. Do you have a PowerBook?

Hi,
My guess is that you have selected the built-in microphone as input (which causes the feedback). Try going to "System Preferences"->"Sound"->"Input" and choose your USB-Turntable for input.

Re: Bad feedback/no input options found
MY CPU is a Power PC G5, not my Mac Pro Laptop ( which I haven't tried yet, but suppose I could). The sound input is set on Unknown USB device in System Preferences. ( where it has always been) I try not to fool with settings when stuff works. If I don't know what it does, I leave it alone!!
Shouldn't there be a choice of input sources in the Audacity drop down menu for input device?

<<<a choice of input sources >>>
There should be, but there frequently isn't. Audacity is a complete slave to the computer it's running on, so it's best to select the input thing in System Preferences.
That's how both of mine work. I would have been happier if the Mac could figure out the chipset name like it did with my USB microphone, but we take what we can get.
If you change that System Preference to Built In Microphone, then the noise goes away and the microphone starts to work, right, and you can make a recording of your voice? You may need to turn the speaker volume way down to avoid howling.
We're guessing you have an iMac. Apple put the PowerPC G5 processor in a bunch of different machines.

And yes, again, one of the failures of a USB turntable is it just starts delivering trash to you.

I just paid for a good quality phono cartridge and needle the same amount you paid for the whole turntable, digital services and all, so miracles may not happen here.
