Launching Audacity by opening a file doesn't import the file
A user on OS X 10.6.8 on a "brand new 15" MacBook Pro" has reported to [email protected] that he cannot import a file if he launches Audacity by opening this file, but that this is not a problem in 1.3.12. Once the application is open, there is no problem importing MP3's or AIFF's.
I don't know at the moment the exact mechanism by which he opens the file, but could someone check it in 1.3.13 please? You could also check it in 1.3.14 alpha, but builds on or after 18 August will have that extra message box displaying the Audacity version (which may or may not affect this).
Thanks,
Gale

Re: Launching Audacity by opening a file doesn't import the
I used this music file:
http://www.kozco.com/tech/piano2-CoolEdit.mp3
...as an MP3 that I didn't make on Audacity. I downloaded it to my desktop.
Right-Click or Control-Click (checked both) > Open With > Audacity 1.3.13. Opens perfectly.
I would have been happier if the file in question was available instead of me randomly opening any MP3.
Intel Mac Mini
OS-X 10.6.8
Audacity 1.3.13
I need to drop out for a while. This is a holiday here and I have to finish a project for work tomorrow.

Re: Launching Audacity by opening a file doesn't import the
Sorry. Missed one. If you're on a MacBook Pro and you don't know about the Control-Click thing, you would open it like this:
Desktop > Select the file > File > Open With > Audacity 1.3.13.
That works, too.
Koz
Desktop > Select the file > File > Open With > Audacity 1.3.13.
That works, too.

Is that "Desktop > Select the file..." path from the Finder?
Not heard any more from user (or any comment from Leland or Michael). Are there other ways to launch Audacity by opening the file, as in Windows land?
* Drag the file to the Audacity icon?
* Can "Open With" have a default, so that double-clicking a file makes it open with the default application for that extension?

Re: Launching Audacity by opening a file doesn't import the
Hello,
I'm the aforementioned user. The "brand new 15" MacBook Pro" is a 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 with 8GB of 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM, Model Identifier MacBook Pro 8,2, and an AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics card in addition to the built-in Intel card. If you need Boot ROM or other info, please let me know.
I downloaded the file you posted, and both right-clicked and option-clicked to open with, and got the same result: Audacity opens, but the file is not imported, and the main window is empty, meaning there is no track.
Any ideas?

Did you actually install Audacity 1.3.13, or are you running it from the DMG file? How are you getting back and forth between the versions?
What kind of user are you on your system?

Re: Launching Audacity by opening a file doesn't import the
Hi Koz,
Yes, I'm using the installed version of 1.3.13. I trashed the DMG file long ago.
Incidentally, my version of 1.3.12 is on my (last model, Sept., 2005 of the) G4 PowerBook running OS X 10.4.11. The 1.3.12 release vanished before I could try it on my new MacBook Pro which I got at the end of June this year.
Last night I thought of something. I looked at my Console error log and found a huge number of kCGErrorFailures, kCGError Illegal Arguments, and CGErrorBreakpoint errors for Audacity at the exact timestamp of the time I was attempting to open the files with Audacity. Every aif and mp3 I've attempted to open with Audacity results in the program launching but not importing the file, and the log in Audacity shows nothing other than its progress in loading the FFmpeg libraries. I can import the files with no problem once the app is launched.
I'm at work at the moment, so I don't have access to the same computer, but if you'd like a more detailed account of the Console error log, I'll gladly post it.
Thanks so much.

In that case could you try 1.3.12 on the current machine:Todd Merrell wrote:my version of 1.3.12 is on my (last model, Sept., 2005 of the) G4 PowerBook running OS X 10.4.11. The 1.3.12 release vanished before I could try it on my new MacBook Pro which I got at the end of June this year.

The console log certainly might be useful, though you should check whether the same errors are there if you just launch Audacity by double-clicking audacity.app (i.e. without asking it to import a file as well).
Also what about launching Audacity by opening an .aup project file, with which Audacity will be associated? If you don't have an .aup file, just import an MP3 then File > Save Project.

Hi Gale and Koz,
Here is the Console error log from trying to open the above mp3 that I downloaded to my desktop via Audacity 1.3.13beta:

When i created an aup file from the aforementioned file I got this:

Whether CGErrors and kCGErrors are CoreGraphics related sounds very plausible, especially if this poster is to be believed: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3453 ... allocation
To be honest with you, the errors logged in Console look more more like an issue with how window displays in Audacity are drawn, which hasn't been a problem for me (maybe there's some kind of exception handling ging on). The problem I'm having seems more like a pathname problem, or a pointer problem, or maybe something funky in a library. Incidentally, I did a complete software update last night (including my OS), and fixed all my permissions, with no change.
Downloading the .12 version right now...
OK, same problem when trying to open the same mp3. No surprise, I got an error on startup stating that Ffmpeg had been successfully loaded previously, but that it couldn't find it now (I didn't change the prefs for the test). Here's the Audacity log if you need it:

Re: Launching Audacity by opening a file doesn't import the
P.S - Koz:
I'm an admin user on my machine,
and Gale and Koz:
I just tried opening 13beta by double-clicking on the application icon, and got the same Console error and the same startup state for the session. The same happens when I try to open an .aup file in both 12 and 13.
If it's any help, these Console errors seem to be happening mostly with older versions of browsers, especially Camino, Firefox (both are Mozilla-flavored), and Chrome. Again, I don't thinkthis has anything to do with opening and importing an audio file but rather something to do with how windows are displayed.
