I am using a Mac OS X, 10.5.8. I downloaded and began using the beta, Audacity 1.3.13 last week. I finished one project (record as file plays, changed volumes, noise reduction, cut, exported as MP3.) It's a bit clunky at time compared to the hyper-expensive program I once used but I was very satisfied.
Yesterday and this morning the program froze four times. When it freezes, I can "force quit" to end the program, however my computer itself still won't shut down correctly (3 times, I had to take the plug out of the wall). I can use other programs but can't shut down the computer and restart Audacity. When I try to "shut down", I get an error message saying that Audacity is still running and I see it in the dashboard with the lighted "on" button below it.
As near as I can tell, the problem begins when I type a command three times in a row. Once the command was "highlight". Once a command to "begin play" at the cursor. As I continue, I'll probably understand what commands cause the freezing and try to avoid them.
I'd appreciate your advice and suggestions.

Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.
Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

Re: Audacity Freezes with Multiple Clicks
You couldn't shut down by pressing and holding the power button? It generally takes about five or six seconds.
Are you filling up your hard drive? This will cause Sudden Computer Insanity.
How long is the show? Are you recording surveillance work? 12-hour stereo shows take up an enormous amount of room and can cause unstable operation. Each layer of UNDO at each tool or filter can duplicate the whole show.
Go > Utilities > Activity Monitor.
You can quit a single run-away application from there. (I would still restart, but then you can do it gracefully)

We live on high quality information. What command and where? As near as I can tell, the problem begins when I type a command three times in a row.
