Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

You are intentionally creating buzz and hum with the idea of troubleshooting.

If that fails, the cable may be bad.

I get no buzzing, on either cables, by 'the cable may be bad' do you mean unable to record, or just broken?

Both cables work while playing guitar... :?

So try putting one end of the cable into audio out and the other into line-in and record from Audacity using line-in.

No offense, but i tried that, and it didn't work which is the entire reason for this thread :$

It's the reason i don't know why it doesn't work...

Topic moved to the Windows > audacity 1.3.x forum.

When you try to record the guitar, do you get a flat blue line like this:

If you do, try selecting a section in the middle of the track and apply the Normalize effect using "Normalize to: 0 dB".
Does the selection remain as a flat line after applying the Normalize effect?

No offence taken, but you asked was there any other way to test the line-in and I don't see anywhere in this thread until now where you say you tested with audio out.

Can you still give us (as well as the answer to Steve's question)
  • An image of the listed devices when you click the output device and input device dropdowns in Device Toolbar
  • An image of the Recording sections of "Sound" and "Sounds and Audio Devices" in 7 and XP respectively
Maybe we could take one computer at a time, whichever is most easy for you.

My mistake, i thought i stated that i used record out, which is the only other input i have on my amp, but nevermind that.

I have attached the images you requested, of the computer with windows 7.

Yes, it does.

The image above is basically what i get when strumming, nothing even shows up on the little mixing tab next to it.

My apologies for not replying to both in the same post, i didn't see yours until after i posted the first one.

I don't know what you mean. Could you post a screen shot of that?
Did you try "Amplifying" the flat line?

I meant connecting audio out (green) of the computer to line-in of the computer.

I meant can you shows us screenshots of the input and output device dropdowns in Audacity's Device Toolbar .

The Windows Control Panel for audio is called "Sound" in Windows 7 and "Sounds and Audio Devices" in Windows XP.

If you amplify the flat line it will let us know if you are recording absolute silence or low level noise, or a low level signal of what you intend.

Look to the right of the 'line in' picture, those bars usually bounce up and down when something is played into the microphone source etc.

And yes, it did nothing.
