I had an old version of Audacity, which I hadn't used for a while, but I'm going to be doing some editing again, so I upgraded to the 1.2.6 version. Now, I can't open any WAV files. As soon as I click "open" and select a wav file, Audacity immediately crashes. I'm using Windows XP.
What's going on?
Thanks!

Re: Crashes immediately after opening a WAV file
I know that the website says "latest version", but Audacity 1.2.6 is a very old version (the last of the 1.2.x series) that has not been maintained for about 5 years. Try the 1.3.13 version: http://audacityteam.org/download/

Re: Crashes immediately after opening a WAV file
The instant you have serious troubles with Audacity 1.2, we push you over to 1.3.
Audacity 1.2 is very old and no longer supported,
patched, corrected, or updated. Audacity 1.2 can
be unstable on newer computers.
Download and install the latest Audacity 1.3 from here...
http://audacityteam.org/download/
You can install both audacity 1.2 and Audacity 1.3 on
the same computer, but only use one at a time.
Audacity 1.2 will not open projects made on Audacity 1.3.
If you use MP3 or some of the more modern audio
compression formats, get Lame and FFMpeg software
from the same web site. Do not use older software
or software from other web sites, even though they
may have the same names.
Can we assume you have plenty of error-checked, defragmented drive space? No Audacity version will work into a crowded, fragmented drive.

Re: Crashes immediately after opening a WAV file
Thanks for the tips. I will start by trying the newer version. Then defrag and error check, if necessary.

That's done it. Thanks.
