Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Odd "issue"

Post by jeffreyb89 » Sun Jun 19, 2011 6:35 pm

When I go into preferences and set to my microphone and then switch to "what u hear" it picks up my microphone and "what u hear", so I can hear myself, which is problematic.

The odd part is when I change from microphone to auxiliary before changing to "what u hear", it does not pick up my microphone.

Every time I try to go directly from microphone to "what u hear"again, it picks up my microphone again unless I select auxiliary first.

An inconvenience to be sure, but it does actually work if I select auxiliary before "what u hear".

A possible bug? Not sure, but quite interesting. Thanks

EDIT: "Updating" to the beta yields the same issue.

Windows machines can have multiple recursive sound pathways. It's confusing and it drives everybody nuts. Modern Windows machines leave it out and Macs never had it.

You can make it a lot worse with some of the Audacity settings.

All that and we never heard the goal. Is it to record your guitar through a microphone for example?

It's true you can't have the same settings for recording YouTube Music as you need for recording your guitar performance. That's just the way it is. Stereo-Mix or What-U-Hear will give you access to all the sound pathways in your machine both directions. It's the exact wrong setting for a local microphone straight into Audacity.

What U hear shouldn't pick up your microphone if you mute the microphone playback. You can make that change in the Windows Control Panel. If you are not sure how, please say what version of Windows you are using.

I was mainly just curious for the future, I guess the minor issue can allow me to either record only "what u hear" or let me record along with "what u hear".

I guess depending on the circumstances, this increased my options for what I can record/not record.

How so? I just added that if someone said to upgrade to the beta. Not much use to have an edit button if it's so "impossible" to track.

And anyway, a reply would only come AFTER a response from someone and as I edited it hours before a response even came, editing only makes sense.

Thanks to those who overlooked my apparent "mistake" in posting etiquette, and helped me understanding more about why the issue happened in the first place.

You may lock the topic if you want.
