can't get new Tape2usb to record
I purchased a Grace Tape2USB ii and connected it with the USB. When I try to record from it to computer, in Audacity there only shows a straight line. I have Windows XP. I have tried changing Playback device,Recording, gone into control panel tried changing In-line everything. What am I doing wrong. When tape is in play mode I can turn the switch to "cassette" and hear it fine, but change it to "Line-In" nothing in Audacity. Any help?

See: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/USB_turntables
And do yourself a favour and upgrade to 1.3.13 (it's now a very stable Beata and much better than 1.2 on most modern platforms). You can get it from here: http://audacityteam.org/download/

This may sound craxy, but when I recorded Harry''s game single by Clannad as I needed to transfer, it worked with microphone. Get a mini jack to jack lead if you haven't got one already. Connect one mini jack cable to headphone socket of tape to usb, and other end into microphone. I don't have a Line-in but microphone works. To record you need to use stereo mix. First make sure you have enabled stereo mix. Right-click speaker icon, recorded devices, if stereo mic isnt shown, on recorded devices, right-click and say whow disabled devices and click stereo mix. Now you got that set up, click stereo mix, and make sure listen to thisdevice is disabled as if it is ticked, there be a huge noise. Dont click listen to this device, but change levels on stereo mix to high. Restart audacity, click stereo mic and press play on tape to usb and see if it works.

What you're supposed to do is open up Windows Control Panels > Sound and find the USB device there. You can do this with Audacity closed. After you do that, make sure the volume control associated with that device is turned up. If you can't find the USB device, make sure you load any software drivers that may have come with your device.
If all that fails, then yes, you might try the analog method. The Mic-In on most Windows Laptop computers is mono, not stereo, and it's easily overloaded creating crunchy, clicking audio.
The best alternative method is to give your laptop a real Stereo Line-In with a UCA-202 or equivalent. These work well.

Connect the stereo analog outputs of your player to that, find it in Windows Control Panels, and then Audacity.
