Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Recording question

Post by waddlefan8 » Thu Jun 16, 2011 12:13 am

Quick question...

I need to set my colleague up with an easy way to record voice overs on her Windows laptop...

Will Audacity allow her to record a VO with an external mic?

If, so what kind of file does it create?

Any help here would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Nick

You may not even need that if the laptop has a built-in microphone. Yes, this would be relatively small potatoes for Audacity. Anything the Operating System "knows about" you can record on Audacity.

Which microphone beyond that is a doctoral dissertation.

Audacity has a list of file types it will export like FLAC, Microsoft WAV, Apple AIFF, etc. All very high quality. Most people also want lesser quality MP3 and for that you need to add the "lame" software package. Audacity can't be delivered with MP3 because it's licensed software. You can also export some of the more exotic formats with the FFMpeg software.

Get all that from the main software download page.

Audacity will not Save a sound file. You have to Export to get one.

Do one simple test all the way through before you commit the farm. Audacity Projects make terrible archive backups.
