Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

V1.3.13 stalls on W7 (32 bit) SP1

Post by kengwilson » Tue Jun 14, 2011 1:00 pm

After import of MP3 file I am allowed one mouseclick before Audacity "freezes" on me. This did not happen before I installed SP1. Any ideas?

I don't know exactly, but It's probably a Windows issue... I think Audacity uses the Windows supplied MP3 decoder. (It uses LAME for encoding.)

You might try re-installing Windows Media Player (and unistalling the old copy). I assume WMP can play the file?

I 've heard of a similar issue before, and sometimes it's only some MP3s that won't open. So, maybe try some other MP3s. (In other words... This should never happen... But apparently, there are times when a particular MP3 decoder is incompatible with a particular MP3 encoder.)

Which exact version of Audacity are you using?
(look in "Help menu > About Audacity")

I've tried a fair number of files with the same result.

Is this specific to MP3 files? (If you don't have any audio files other than MP3s, make some test samples by opening Audacity, generate a test tone, and export several times in different formats).

Tried a testtone in WAV, AUP, OGG, MP3, ETC

Same result each time. Can't play anything and have to close Audacity via ctrl/alt/del and cancel before clicking on the X (top right of screen).

So were you able to create and export the test tone successfully each time? Is it just when you try to play "anything" in Audacity that it freezes?

Can you go into "Edit menu > Preferences > Devices" and tell me (1) what options are currently selected, and (2) what other options there are.

I've installed the German language, so it's a bit tricky sometimes. I hope you can make head and tails of my answer;

It may be necessary to update your sound card drivers (see here: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Updat ... ce_Drivers )
