Audacity problem with recordings.

Post by lolredranger » Thu Jun 02, 2011 9:03 pm

Hi,

I've fairly new to Audacity and was hoping someone could help me out here. I can't select anything on the mixer toolbar as it's greyed out, I'm using Windows 7. I know it's supposed to be greyed out, and I've tried all the fixes but I still can't record anything. I tried going into edit > preferences and then the Audio I/O tab and selecting the appropriate devices and I still can't record the audio comming from my computer. I went into the control panel and enabled the appropriate devices, and still nothing. I'll attach a screenshot just to be sure.

Also I don't know if you guys want a dxdiag from my computer, let me know if you do.

Yes, whenever someone complains of "not being able to record on their computer," it's a good bet they really want to record YouTube, not their guitar solo.

If you've been all through this...

Then your only hope may be money-based software.

What are you trying to record? Is it playing through the X-Fi sound card?
Is your X-Fi an internal sound card or the USB version?

Well I am trying to record the audio that is being produced by the BEAMZ hardware my company is using. I am trying to find an another recording program because the one that came with the BEAMZ software I purchased is really weird, in that sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I'm not trying to record from youtube :?

And yes I have tried that page on the wiki, and the soundcard it's internal.

When using BEAMZ, does the sound play through your X-Fi sound card?
Could you check the exact version number of your Audacity 1.3.x (Help menu > About Audacity)
Is there a "Creative Mixer" icon near the Time/Date on your Desktop? If there is, check in there that the recording volume is turned up for "What U Hear".

I'll take a look as soon as I can, I believe the version is actually 1.2.x but I'm not sure as a client is using the computer that I have it installed on. Is this an issue that was fixed in one of the 1.3 versions?

Ok my version is 1.2.6, is this an outdated version and does this problem persist or is it fixed in future versions?

And I believe the BEAMZ audio plays through the speakers, not the sound card.

I can't say whether Audacity 1.3.13 will solve this problem or not, but I would highly recommend that you upgrade as Audacity 1.3.13 does solve a lot of problems and is generally a much better program. All development work on the Audacity 1.2.x series ended some years ago.
You can get 1.3.13 from here: http://audacityteam.org/download/

Note that Audacity 1.3.x can open projects made with the old 1.2 version, but projects that have been saved by Audacity 1.3 cannot be opened by Audacity 1.2.

There's a couple of add-ons that are worth also installing:
Lame (provides support for exporting MP3 files): http://audacityteam.org/help/faq?s=install&i=lame-mp3
FFmpeg (provides support for import/export of many additional file formats): http://manual.audacityteam.org/index.ph ... tallffmpeg

Which speakers? Speakers built into the BEAMZ hardware or speakers plugged into your computer. If the latter, where do the speakers plug in?

Te speakers that plug into the computer, the BEAMZ hardware doesn't have speakers it uses the computer's speakers, and those plug into the soundcard in the green jack.
