Envelope

This is my first post on this forum so forgive me if it is too simplisitic.
Using the beta version of Audacity and two tracks i.e. music and voice over, I cannot get the envelope to work in order to reduce the sound track for the voice over section.
Is this a beta problem or am I doing something daft? The latter is likely I admit.

The envelope tool should work fine in the current beta version.
It's difficult to know why you are having a problem without seeing it, but this is what the wiki says about using the envelope tool: http://audacityteam.org/manual-1.2/toolbar.html

Note: there seems to be a small error in the manual:
"When the envelope tool is selected, the amplitude envelope of eeach track is highlighted in a green line"
On my machine, the track is highlighted with a yellow line, and the edge of the envelope is highlighted in blue, so I'm not sure where "green" comes in.
