This is my first post on this forum so forgive me if it is too simplisitic.
Using the beta version of Audacity and two tracks i.e. music and voice over, I cannot get the envelope to work in order to reduce the sound track for the voice over section.
Is this a beta problem or am I doing something daft? The latter is likely I admit.

The envelope tool should work fine in the current beta version.
It's difficult to know why you are having a problem without seeing it, but this is what the wiki says about using the envelope tool:
http://audacityteam.org/manual-1.2/toolbar.html
Note: there seems to be a small error in the manual:
"When the envelope tool is selected, the amplitude envelope of e
each track is highlighted in a green line"
On my machine, the track is highlighted with a yellow line, and the edge of the envelope is highlighted in blue, so I'm not sure where "green" comes in.
