Export multiple problem

Post by jmmiller43 » Wed Aug 06, 2008 4:04 pm

I am a new user and successfully produced .wav files the first time I used the export multiple command. However, in working with a much longer recording (2.5 hours of music), my 42 .wav files exported, but only two of them contain music. The rest are all named correctly, but only contain 1 second of silence. When I edited the recording, I inserted 1 second of silence between each subtrack, then created a label and typed the name of the file in the label box. It seems as if the exported files only contain the inserted silence, but I thought the label contained both the beginning and ending points of each sub-track. What have I done wrong? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, John Miller

In Audacity 1.2.x labels are single point makers.
In Audacity 1.3.x labels have a start and end point and mark a region of time.

Here's a picture of a label in Audacity 1.3.5. You can see that the labelled region is the section from 2.0 seconds to 5.0 seconds.

Actually in 1.3 labels can either be a labelled refion as Steve writes and nicely shows in his posting - but 1.3 can also have single point labels too, just like 1.2.

If you use single point labels with 1.3 for Multiple Export then Audaity will eaxport each section between two labels as a "track" - nemed with the text of the label at the beginning of the "track" - as in 1.2.

Note that Labels are one of the key Google Summer of Code projects that are currently being worked on - so we may see an improvement in the behaviour of labels in 1.4 when it gets released - hopefully later this year.

This is true, but I would not recommend it.
I recently came across someone that had the problem:
Labelling a track and using "Export Multiple" - occasionally it would produce a very short file (just a few kB) instead of the expected selection. The problem turned out to be that the user thought they had inserted a single point label, but had actually selected a very small region (just a few samples), but unless you zoomed in very close it looked like a single point.
