Following installation of Version 1.3.13 (after helpful advice on Adding L & R channels together - see earlier thread) and successfully converting stereo tracks (obtained on version 1.2.6) to mono, I tried to record. On pressing the record button, the computer shut down giving the "blue screen of death" of which one line is: p17.sys Address B92C72F9 base as B92A7000 DateStamp 40c 68f2a and system physical dump
(this doesn't mean any thing to me because I don't know about this sort of thing)
This happens whether anything connected to the input or not (I had 3 attempts).
On switching computer off and then on again it is OK and I have no problem recording with version 1.2.6
I am using an internal "Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit" sound card (and Windows XP on a DELL dimension 9100 PC).

Re: CRASH on attempting to record with 1.3.13
BSOD when recording is virtually always a sign of a driver problem. The "correct" solution would be to fix the drivers (most likely the sound card drivers), but if everything else is working correctly it may be easier to work around the problem.
Open Audacity 1.2.6 and make a note of the following settings:
Edit menu > Preferences > Audio I/O
Edit menu > Preferences > Quality
Close Audacity 1.2.6 and open Audacity 1.3.13
Make a note of these settings:
Edit menu > Preferences > Devices
Edit menu > Preferences > Quality
Post the settings in your reply and hopefully we'll be able to see a way round the problem.

Hello Steve, thanks for getting back.steve wrote:BSOD when recording is virtually always a sign of a driver problem. The "correct" solution would be to fix the drivers (most likely the sound card drivers), but if everything else is working correctly it may be easier to work around the problem.

The settings are as follows:
Audacity 1.2.6
Edit menu > Preferences > Audio I/O: Recording and Playback Devices both: Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit
Play other tracks... and Software Playthrough boxes not ticked
Edit menu > Preferences > Quality
Default Sample Rate 44100Hz;
Default Sample Format 32-bit float
Real-time sample rate converter: Fast Sinc Interpolation
High-quality sample rate converter High-quality Sinc Interpolation
Real-time dither: None
High-quality dither: Triangle
Audacity 1.3.13
Edit menu > Preferences >Devices
Interface :Host MME
Playback: Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit
Recording: Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit:Line-in
Quality: settings as 1.2.6
Hope that helps (I can't see anything about interface with 1.2.6)
Re: CRASH on attempting to record with 1.3.13
Unfortunately that does not tell us a great deal.
In Audacity 1.3.13, try setting the Recording and Playback devices to "Microsoft Sound Mapper", this will set Audacity to use your computers' default configuration.
