Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Help: Audacity Records Outside Sounds

Post by Peanut373 » Wed Apr 13, 2011 10:21 pm

Hello everyone, when I use Audacity to record, it also records exterior sounds outside of the computer. A specific example is if I would talk, Audacity would record my voice as well as the audio I was recording on the computer. How can I disable this so it only records what exits the speakers, and not enters them. Thanks for any help :)

You are recording the laptop's built-in microphone.

So I understand, you were recording YouTube or some other internet audio and were getting room noises as well?

Recording Internet Audio can be amusing depending on your machine and how new it is.

You should know that recording a live performance in your living room takes different settings than recording internet audio. If you think it's easy getting back and forth between the two, then you're probably doing it wrong.

You should also stop using Audacity 1.2.

Audacity 1.2 is very old and no longer supported,
patched, corrected, or updated. Audacity 1.2 can
be unstable on newer computers.

Download and install the latest Audacity 1.3 from here...

http://audacityteam.org/download/

You can install both audacity 1.2 and Audacity 1.3 on
the same computer, but only use one at a time.

Audacity 1.2 will not open projects made on Audacity 1.3.

If you use MP3 or some of the more modern audio
compression formats, get Lame and FFMpeg software
from the same web site. Do not use older software
or software from other web sites, even though they
may have the same names.

Thanks for the help (I downloaded the newer Audacity also). Yes, I am trying to record audio from youtube and I don't want to have room noise in the recording. This may be a stupid question, but how can I solve this so the recording doesn't include room noise?

That's what that wiki posting tells you how to do. Unfortunately, the wiki covers multiple different computers, so it's a little rough to slog through, but it does work.

The process gets more and more difficult as your Windows laptop gets newer and newer. By the time you get to Win7, they make it very difficult indeed.
