'Cursor' display issue

I'm not quite sure what to call the green triangle at the top of the track that moves along the timeline so I used the word 'cursor'. I couldn't really search because I don't know what to call it! Please enlighten me as to the correct terminology.

Anyway, I've been using Audacity for many years and never had this problem. Then all of a sudden, vertical green lines are being generated sporadically as the cursor moves. It doesn't happen all the time thankfully. But it is persistent and driving me a little nuts.

What is this feature and how do I turn it off?

Which audacity version are you using? On which linux distro?

Yes, that is exactly what I am seeing.

Audacity version is 1.3.5-beta and I'm still on Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron). This spring I plan to dump Ubuntu and go with Debian Squeeze . . . that will be an adventure! I am in the middle of a BIG project right now and want to finish it first. This bug is making that harder to do. Just started maybe a month ago.

That a known bug (and an old one). Audacity 1.3.5 is an old version. I'm not sure if that bug has been corrected in the current 1.3.12 version, but nonetheless you should try to upgrade to 1.3.12 (and 1.3.13 will probably be out very soon).

Steve was the one reporting that issue on that other thread and he's an ubuntu user so lets wait and see what he has to say.

Why would that be an adventure?

I've been using Debian for the last 10 years or so and I've been happy with it so far. I've given ubuntu a few tries (from the first release up to the current one) but it never got me convinced. I'm sticking to the original (Debian)

Thanks for the input. I experimented a little and clicking on the functions in the audio track panel stops the lines momentarily.

Would 1.3.12 even install on Hardy? Why did this just start happening recently? At this point, I'm not tweaking my system very much so can't imagine where things went south . . .

ANY new OS install is an adventure and even more so on dialup. I really liked Ubuntu until it went off the deep end. Oh well . . .

Yes it's a bug and yes it's been fixed. However I don't know if the bug was in Audacity, in the graphics drivers or somewhere else, or a combination of issues. I do know that a couple of updates later the problem disappeared.

I appreciate that updating over dial-up can be problematic, and if you upgrade to either Ubuntu 10.04 or 10.10, there's a huge amount of updates after the initial installation.It may be worth getting a 1 month mobile broadband subscription, or take your computer round to a friends house for an "upgrade party".

I have some outstanding updates so I guess I'll start downloading tonight. Maybe I'll get lucky . . .

Updates didn't fix the problem so I reverted from 1.3.5-2 back to 1.3.4-1. The lines are now gone.

I'll live with this until I upgrade my OS in a month or two.
