Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

Digital Recorder Direct into Audacity?

Post by froggybywater » Wed Mar 23, 2011 4:32 pm

I have an Olympus digital recorder and have successfully imported audio from it into the Olympus software and then to Audacity. I have a Mac with 10.4. Is there a way I can bypass the Olympus software and just import the audio directly into Audacity from the recorder? I have some Windows friends asking the same question too.

Anything the Mac recognizes as a sound device should work.

Apple > System Preferences > Hardware > Sound > Input. If the device appears on that list, then you're good to go, although it may be interesting to get the format right. Do you know what the digital format is on that device? Can you open the Olympus software and get it to tell you?

USB microphones arrive at the Mac as a digital bitstream and they work just fine. I've never used S/PDIF, although most newer Macs a fully wired for it.

How do you connect the Olympus?

The recorder is connected to the Mac using a USB cable, but it does not show up in the input devices of the preferences panel. The format is WMA.

Oops... Just found where the input says 'Name' - LIne in and 'Port' - Audio line-in port. Does this tell you anything? What kind of cable would I need to plug into the audio line in port on the Mac? The recorder has a USB port and one for 'Ear'.

Actually, I think your device should show up as a USB mass storage device. When you connect it to the Mac does it show up in the Sidebar of a Finder window or on the desktop? If you, you should be able to drag the files off the recorder onto you hard disk or import them into Audacity directly from the recorder.

When I connect the recorder with the USB cable, it shows up on the desktop. I then open the file and drag the WMA into Audacity. But when I play it, it just has static and it should be playing a conversation. So that doesn't work. I'm beginning to think I need the Olympus software after all... Any other ideas?

You need to have ffmpeg installed for audacity to be able to import wma files.

Check the Mac section on this wiki topic: http://manual.audacityteam.org/index.ph ... tallffmpeg
Include as much details as you can in your post (Audacity version, Operating System, Equipment used, etc).
Please post your question in the appropriate forum (regarding audacity version and operating system).

You probably also want to be using 1.3.12 http://audacityteam.org/download/beta_mac
