Hello,
I have a file where the volume level goes up and down all the time. It sounds almost as if someone used fade in -- fade out -- fade in, and out on it. I tried using the compress dynamics plugin because that's what I managed to google out but it only helps a very little bit. Besides, it adds a lot of noise to the loud parts and when I try to remove it, it becomes incomprehensible. Can you please give me some directions? Is it just a matter of wrong settings or am I using the completely wrong technique?

Re: Volume waving up and down
You may have no show. Chris's Compressor does a remarkable job of evening out volume variations at the default settings. If Chris couldn't deal with the damage, then the show may be beyond help.

Chris doesn't affect the loud portions of the show. It brings everything else up to match. Try it again and use the settings that came with the tool.

Yes, it was Chris's compressor that I used. It's actually an audiobook which I got from a friend but I'm not sure where he has it from.
Anyways, thank you for the information and a quick answer! Now that I know I'm on the right way, I can try fiddling with the settings. I guess I must have done something more to it, or terribly wrong with the settings that I got the loud parts affected.

Re: Volume waving up and down
You may have more problems than that. It is practically a certainty that you should stop using Audacity 1.2 and install Audacity 1.3.12 from here...
http://audacityteam.org/download/
You can install both versions, but only use one at a time. Audacity 1.3 Projects will not open in 1.2.
If you have single file insanity (everything else works OK), you may be trying to manage a file that Audacity doesn't understand. Try installing Lame and FFMpeg from the same web site. Those packages allow exporting as MP3 and recognition of many, many different file formats.

Re: Volume waving up and down
Oh dear, how did you know I was using 1.2? I switched to 1.3 and downloaded the newest version of the compressor (1.2.7β1) and it seems it helped. Or maybe I was just less frantic, but anyway, the results are now much better and almost what I wanted, so I'm sure I can now fix it with just a little tuning – thank you very much!
