Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

New user - question before download

Post by Toni » Wed Jul 16, 2008 8:28 pm

What is the difference between Audacity 1.2.5 (Intel) and Audacity 1.2.6a (PPC)? They are both for Mac OS X. The site says to use 1.2, but does not provide information to distinguish these two possibilities.

Describe your computer and use as many numbers and letters as you can. We'll tell you which one to use. A hint is that all the new Macs have a processor inside made by the Intel Corporation and all the older Macs contain a Motorola Power PC chip.

This older PowerBook under my fingers has a Motorola PPC chip and my newer Mac Mini at home uses an Intel.

Oh, better yet. Sorry, low blood sugar.

Click on the Apple > About This Mac. Somewhere in the lower third of the window, it will tell you the processor type.

I'm using a G4 with OS 9.3, 450 Mhz, 1GB SDRAM. Let me know if you need more information. Thanks!

<<<G4>>>

The "G" series of chips were made by Motorola. You have a Power PC or PPC machine.

However, you also have a Pre OS-X System. You're on System 9. Specifically OS 9.3.

OK, there is an Audacity for you. It's the third selection on this page.

Like the notes say, they stopped developing Audacity for OS-9, so this could be an adventure. There's no guarantee that the plugins and extra tools are going to work. MP3 sound production is a plugin for Audacity. It's not built-in because of licensing issues.

Could someone PLEASE give me an answer so I can download this software?

There are two versions given for OS X (Intel) (PPC) with nothing to distinguish them.

I am using OS 10.3 on a G4.

Can someone tell me which version to download?

Thanks!
