Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

GRAVELY disappointed with Audicity !!!!!!!!!

Post by jimkroger » Tue Feb 15, 2011 6:42 am

I am exteremely disappoited that Audicity recommends using SUPER. This is a VERY FLAKY and probably DANGEROUS software producer and website. As soon as I got there mcaffee had to block a trojan. The site is WIERD! You can't find the download link! Is this the kind of professionalism AUDICITY RECOMMENDS???????

It gets worse, much worse.

Can I trust Audacity?

The software they recommended, after two days reports that it is obsolete and you must get the new file. Back to the website where you can't find the download link !!!

Download the new version finally, try to install, and it tells you it must uninstall the old one, says it was successful, then it says it can't overwrite several files!! You have to hit "ignore" or you have to go find the files. Well GUESS WHAT, the program is not there when you try to use the uninstall control panel. NOT IN THE LIST! OK, let's look in program files.....IT'S NOT THERE!! What kind of crap, illegitimate, incompetent software does AUDACITY WANT ME TO USE??

I try several times, no luck. I can't put a wma into Audicity because the SOFTWARE THEY RECOMMEND IS CRAP! IT DOESN'T WORK! IT DOESN'T FOLLOW NORMAL RULES! ITS SCARY !!

CAN I TRUST AUDICITY?

Tell me what to do, Audicity. I just lost one day following your advice.

Where did you get your Audacity program from? This is the official download site.

http://audacityteam.org/download/

People have taken advantage of the Audacity high popularity by offering the software in a bait and switch activity. People find they really downloaded and installed a competing product. This is a serious discussion on the management boards. People have even been offering free Audacity For Sale.

Because of licensing restrictions and costs, the only way Audacity can remain Free is to make you download and install software packages to handle compressed formats like Windows Media, Apple Advanced Compressed and even good old MP3.

That would be the lame and FFMpeg packages from the same web site. There's no choice. You have the additional problems of Copy Protected Music Files which will refuse to open up in many software packages, technically competent or not.

Windows Audacity 1.2 installs itself into the Dreaded Windows Registry and can cause problems. It doesn't do that any more.

The current functional champ is 1.3.12. Audacity 1.2 is very old and no longer supported, updated, patched, or corrected, although many people still use it and it's still offered as the current version -- a mistake in many of our views.

We're sorry you had so much trouble, but yes, it is possible to hit the whole list of problems if your lucky four-leaf clover potency runs out.

I can't vouch for Super. I've never used it.

The problem is SUPER, which is recommended by Audacity. Are you connected with Audacity? Why do you recommend this program which I now have on my computer and can't get off correctly, and can not get installed correctly?

That's my question. I also need another wma -> wav converter. But you need to take your recommendation for that garbage off your site.

My embarrassed apologies. I went to the Audacity web site to find the recommendation for SUPER but didn't, and realized it was a website on making ringtones that had recommended both Audacity and SUPER. I can't find that site because CCleaner wiped my history.

So it was not the fault of Audacity or their web site. Sorry. I will need to find a different wma -> wav converter.

Audacity is not connected with SUPER in any way. However, I have used SUPER for years, and still use it.
SUPER is definitely a "quirky" application, but it is also one of the most comprehensive media format conversion tools available for Windows, and probably the most comprehensive FREE conversion tools.

Downloading SUPER is a pain with link after link to follow, however, if you read the text on the linked pages there is actually a lot of good information about format conversion. It is ESSENTIAL that if you want to download SUPER that you download it from the official site (erightsoft) as there are some bad hacked versions floating round other web sites.

SUPER does update (very) frequently because several of the (open source) conversion libraries that it uses are still developing rapidly. Most of the updates are to make updates in these libraries available to users as soon as possible. However, if you have a version of SUPER that works well for your needs, then you probably do not need to update each time an update is available (I tend to update it at about 3 month intervals).

Of course there are many other file format conversion programs. dBPowerAmp gets a lot of excellent reviews, but it is not free ($26 or $38 US depending on the version).

Foobar2000 (free) is also able to convert quite a few audio file formats, rip CDs and is a top grade (though boring in appearance) audio player. I'm not on Windows at the moment, but I think Foobar2000 can convert WMA to WAV. You can check here: http://www.foobar2000.org/

I also use CCleaner and would recommend it.

Dear Ms./Mr. Kozikowski:

I've been having a problem also with audacity, and hope it can be straightened out. I just got Windows 7 and I'm having more problems then when I used Audacity on Windows XP. I hope that both of us and anyone else having difficulty will have some satisfaction from the people who developed this software.

There's two problems. You probably should not have posted at the bottom of somebody else's post. You will get lost down here.

I'm a Mac elf primarily. My last wholly owned Windows machine was Win2K. Still running, by the way. If you have a problem with Windows 2000, I'm your man.

m-
"I just got Windows 7 and I'm having more problems then when I used Audacity on Windows XP. "
You should start your own thread and make sure to use a thread title that describes your situation.

You also need to understand that XP is Windows XP5.1 and Win7 is NT6.1. The core code for the two basic versions of NT (NT5, NT6) IS DIFFERENT and there are major differences in the audio subsystems. NT5 throws all the aduio in together and is limited to CD quality. NT6 allows for multiple audio threads, separate processing for multiple programs and sources at the same time, and DVD+ quality. As a result of that, pretty much ALL audio programs and devices operate differently under the two OSes.

That's why there is one version of Audacity for NT5 (up to Vista) and another newer version still being polished up for NT6 (Vista and Win7).

Two different OSes, major changes between them, which are simply not heavily publicized by Microsoft. In Win7, you'll have to do many things very differently--including using a different version of Audacity.
