Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Can't make effects work.

Post by westhemusicman » Thu Feb 10, 2011 3:33 am

Ok, I have Windows Vista, the latest version of Audacity and I've downloaded the LADSPA and Nyquist plugins from Audacity's site and also tried some from Audacity's wiki and a distortion effect from FreeLoops.com. I installed them into the Audacity/Plugin-ins folder. It asks if I want to open the file so I say yes. Then it tries to open it with Microsoft Word but before it can get anywhere it says it could not open open the file and that it may be corrupt. The file is still in the right folder, so I go to Audacity and check the "Rescan for VST effects" box, and restart Audacity, but not one of the effects is there. I've tried re-installing them and even uninstalled and reinstalled Audacity, but still to no avail. Is there something that I'm doing wrong? Does anyone else have the same problem? Thanks in advance.

You open up effects from the main Audacity editing window. Open a show and Effect > Change Tempo, for example. Your new effects, if Audacity accepts them, should appear at the bottom of the list.

I am having similar difficulty with effects on a 64-bit Windows 7 OS running in Firefox 3.6.13.

Specifically, I am trying to find the effect "Change Tempo" http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Change_Tempo, which is a built-in effect. I have downloaded and run the .exe file for LADSPA_plugins-win-0.4.15 which automatically selected the /Plug-Ins folder.

A screen capture of my effects menu is shown with the available Effects listed. As you will see, Change Tempo is not listed.

Any help with this matter is greatly appreciated. If you ask me for specific computer info and point me in the direction of where I can find it on my machine, I'd be happy to upload screen shots or just report software version numbers as needed.

DZAuthor, you have put Audacity into "CleanSpeech" mode. This is a cut-down interface for people that are just doing simple stuff with speech recordings.
Go to "Edit menu > Preferences > Interface" and disable "CleanSpeech"

Yes, I've gone to the effects menu every single time I tried to download a effect, but it's still not there :(.

Let's start with a simple case first - installing a Nyquist plug-in...
westhemusicman wrote:I installed them into the Audacity/Plugin-ins folder.
What is the exact address of where you put the file? (for example C:Program Files......)
Exactly what steps did you take - how did you "install" them into the folder?
Please give an example of one Nyquist plug-in that you have tried to install (the full name of the plug-in and where you got it from).

Ok, I went to Audacity's website and went to the page for all the Nyquist plug-ins. I chose the "Buzz Tone" effect and clicked download. Then there's two options, either "Save" or "Open. When I click "Open" it downloads it and then tries to open it with Microsoft Word, but before it can bring it up, a error message pops up saying "Works was unable to open the project you selected. The file may be corrupt." So I try it again and save it instead in the OS (C:)/Program Files/Audacity/Plug-Ins folder. Then it gives me the option of either Opening the file or opening the folder the file is in. When I select Open, the whole thing happens all over again for Microsoft Word. When I choose to open the folder the file is in, it brings up the OS (C:)/Program Files/Audacity/Plug-Ins folder. And sure enough, there it is with about 80 other effects I've tried for Audacity, but none of them are showing up in the effects menu. Would the Microsoft Word problem have anything to do with it? I've googled the problem and there's a lot of different answers. Some say it's a virus, others say it's the program you download with.

The latest version of Audacity is 1.3.12, so I assume that this is the version that you have installed. You can check by looking in Audacity "Help menu > About Audacity".
If you do not have Audacity 1.3.12, uninstall Audacity and then download the "Audacity 1.3.12 Installer" from here: http://audacityteam.org/download/ and install it.

I presume that you mean this page: http://audacityteam.org/download/nyquistplugins

The plug-in itself is the .ny file.
The .zip file is a "zip archive" that needs to be "unpacked" in order to "extract" the .ny file.

Windows make it a bit difficult to see what's going on because it will often hide the file "extension". (the file extension is the part of the name that is after the dot, so in the case of "buzz.ny" the file extension is "ny".)

To download the .ny file, RIGHT click on the "View buzz.ny" link and select "Save As..." (the option may be called something slightly different depending on you web browser, but it will be something like that - in Firefox the option is "Save Link As...")

Save the buzz.ny file to your Desktop. You do not "open" this file - if Windows offers to do so, say no.
westhemusicman wrote:(C:)/Program Files/Audacity/Plug-Ins folder
That is not the standard installation folder for Audacity 1.3.x. That's the standard installation folder for Audacity 1.2.x.
Have a look in the C:Program Files folder and see if there is a folder called C:Program FilesAudacity 1.3 Beta (Unicode)
If there is, then in that folder you will find a "Plug-Ins" folder.

Copy or Move the "buzz.ny" file from your desktop into the folder:
C:Program FilesAudacity 1.3 Beta (Unicode)Plug-Ins

Restart Audacity 1.3.12.

"Buzz" is a "Generate" type plug-in so it will appear in the "Generate" menu of Audacity.

They work now!!! Thank you very much :D. So, would I do the same thing to VST and LADSPA plug-ins?
