Removing/"muting" tracks (ie drums) from a song?

Post by trillog » Wed Jan 19, 2011 4:16 am

Is audacity capable of stripping a song apart? I am trying to figure out if this can delete or cut out just certain components of a song, such as the drums. I am not trying to cut out just the vocals or have vocals only, but am looking to see if this can dissect an mp3 into individual tracks, such as guitar, drums, vocals, etc. Thanks!

In a straight answer: no! And no program can do that even if it claims it can. Separating individual instruments from an mp3 is like uncooking a cake and obtaining the original ingredients again... Once you mix it and put it in the oven there's no turning back.

Depending on the song and on a lot of variables you can (to some extent) isolate or remove voice or a particular instrument, but it will never be perfect and it might be quite time consuming for results which might not be very satisfactory...
Include as much details as you can in your post (Audacity version, Operating System, Equipment used, etc).
Please post your question in the appropriate forum (regarding audacity version and operating system).
