Great Results Audacity 1.3.12, ClickRepair

Post by khoffcran » Tue Jan 18, 2011 3:10 am

Hello All - I am getting amazing results going from vinyl into Aud1.3.12, then cleaning the raw data with Davies' ClickRepair. I just recorded and processed John McLaughlin's "My Goals' Beyond" from my 40 y/o vinyl, (hundreds of plays, sometimes not on the best TTs) and I'm absolutely knocked out. For anyone who knows the album, this is about as challenging as it gets: Acoustic guitar by a master of speed and dynamics.

Thank you all for your guidance along the way. I haven't gotten any static interference since switching my USB cable and moving my wireless router well away from the USB inputs.

For anyone looking to duplicate the results: (This is not expensive stuff, and certainly not new stuff) -

Denon DP-300F analog TT, Ortofon 2M Red cartridge at 2g, ART USB Phono Plus V2 A-D interface / USB 2.0 socket of iMac 5,1 (2006 Dual Intel), OS 10.4.11

Audacity 1.3.12 (limit input to -6.0 dB peaks during initial recording)

Raw capture exported as WAV/16, 44.1

Import into Davies' CickRepair; run it through at default LP, CR 50

Reprocess for crackle (with CR turned off) at 50 or 60, depending on condition of vinyl. (No noticable degradation of input signal at either setting to my ears, which are pretty critical).

Reimport into Audacity 1.3.12.

Amplify to -0.5 dB

Process as necessary for fade-ins, -outs if needed. Label

Export as multiple WAV files.

Drop into iTunes. Convert to AAC files within iTunes, where it's faster.

Again, thanks all. These results are better than anything I could have expected, and have opened up music in my vinyl collection (about 2000 lps from Bach to Ornette to Husker Du to Leon Russell and back again) that I thought would have to be replaced by CD, or were irreplacable.

I've found using ClickRepair @ 20 works quite well for me.
I noticed that at higher settings when listening to the 'noise' being removed, there
was often some 'rhythm' (percussion, and sometimes what appeared to be drobo)
being filtered. If I listened to the output, I certainly could not tell this
was happening though.

I did not find it necessary to process for Crackel.
When putting the CR file back into Audacity, the only repair needed was
to place silence between tunes.

To minimize that effect, check the "Reverse" checkbox in ClickRepair.
