Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

No sound from speakers with Audacity

Post by essjay » Sun Jan 16, 2011 3:56 pm

Hi,
Sorry if this has been covered before, but I can't find any direct reference to similar problems.
I've been using Audacity 1.3 Beta on Vista (32) for several months - it's been working fine except there's always been a hum on the recordings made using the PCs onboard sound system (SoundMax).
I thought this might be the cause, so I fitted a PCI sound card (Creative Audio), connected the speakers to that and disabled all the SoundMax functions.
Great - there's now no hum, but there's no output from the speakers when using Audacity.
I can record with Audacity and play back the recording in other applications like iTunes, Nero WaveEditor and MediaPlayer - but not with Audacity.
Everything else seems to work with the new sound card & speaker combination.

I've double checked the Audacity Preferences and these are all correctly assigned.
I've uninstalled Audacity and reinstalled with no difference - still no speaker output.

Just don't know what to do next.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks
Steve

In Edit > Preferences > Devices, check that the Playback device is set to the Creative Audio card.
