I'd still like to know how Hotbar gets its hands on Google rankings - and even CNet, as far as I can tell, supplied the dodgy version. Correct version now in place.

This is a sign off (on this issue) and thanks to all who helped.
The ordered connector arrived and was put to work. I managed to get sound recorded as you said I would, and in the same way as other signals coming in on the Line In socket.
Unfortunately the sound signal was not up to standard and won't do. However I'm working with known quantities now: if this tape recorder won't do the job, another one will, and you guys have helped me get there far faster than if I'd been without your help online. Thanks again.

There is a volume slider control in Windows audio devices to control the level of the "line-in" signal ...

The setting of this line-in volume level can effect soud quality, (i.e. try different settings).

I tested the machine and know a bit more now.
Your post was of interest Trebor, because I didn't know about those Volume options within the Audio tab, although I've had a workaround which meant it was never a problem. Thanks.

In this case though, the machine is not delivering the right sound at the outset and it needs to be serviced. If anyone knows of a service agent in the Exeter - Taunton - Weymouth area, a wide sweep, I would be interested.
