Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

newbie - startup problem

Post by giseleaubut » Mon Jun 23, 2008 2:05 am

Hello,
I've just downloaded Audacity for the very first time on my brand-new iMac. I was able to record a short test voiceover with my Samson USB mic but now it won't let me record and gives me the following error message: Error while opening sound device. Please check the input device settings and the project sample rate.... Help!?!

First step is going into the Mac setup panels and see if the USB microphone is still listed.

Apple > System Preferences > Hardware > Sound > Input.

When I do that, I don't see "USB Microphone or "Samson," but the name of the chipmaker inside the microphone. Make sure it's selected and then go back to Audacity and select "Default Input."

I had Audacity do this to me last night and I figured out something else that can cause this problem. Go back into Audacity Preferences and make sure they are as you left them. My preferences had switched from 2-channel (stereo) to 4-channel audio.

No idea why, but it cleared up immediately when I fixed that.
