Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

error when opening .aup

Post by mikeloshak » Wed Jan 05, 2011 12:14 pm

Can someone please help??
I'm a high school music teacher and have got my students to record things at home with audacity on windows then send them to me with an email. I have a mac and am running 1.3 but I can't open the .aup files, I just get an error message that says:
junk after document element at line 356
. I think it's a different number each time, is there anything I can do to listen to their work?
Thanks in advance!
Mike

Yes get them to Export a WAV file of their project and email that to you.

An Audacity project is a complex structure and is not easily transportable unless you know exactly what you are doing - it is designed for speed of processing in Audacity , not for transporting and moving around. A WAV file is a lossless reasonably universal production music file.

AUP isn't a sound file. It's a Project Manager. They can either send you the _DATA folder that goes with it, or export the show as WAV (an actual sound file) and send that.

Alternately, they can install the "lame" software package which will allow them to export an MP3, which is probably what you really want. You are warned to get the lame software from the same place you got your particular version of Audacity. They're not all the same.

Oddly enough, MPEG1, Layer 3 (MP3) is licensed software and can't be included in the distribution of Audacity.
