Can't get any playback

Post by Fastpaul » Thu Jun 19, 2008 2:36 pm

Hi everyone, I know you've heard about a million people with this problem, but I've been trying things out for a few hours and I still can't get it to work. When I'm recording I can see the meters in the upper-right moving according to the sound, but the wave on the track does almost nothing and I can't hear anything when I try to play it back. I've tried with and without a mic, and with and without speakers. I went and did the edit/preferences thing and switched from the sound mapper to my sound card. It seems as though what you've told to other people is to do something with the soundcard mixer which if fairly easy to get to, however, I have the Realtek one which I've heard is more difficult to adjust and I'm not the best with computers. From what I've seen, nobody has really said what needs to be done if one has this soundcard. Would anyone mind walking me through what I need to do here. It would probably be useful to other newbies as well. Thanks.

I have Windows XP and am using a Toshiba Satillite laptop if that makes any difference.
thanks again

Fastpaul,
I would suggest running through the steps here http://computershopper.com/howto/how-to ... p3s-200706 (especially step 2) just to make sure things are setup in Audacity correctly before making changes to the sound card settings. Are you recording a tape or lp? This might change some of the answers that you receive in terms of what to look for regarding settings. Let us know if this helps or not.

I would be remiss if I didn't add these links to other helpful Audacity pages:
