1.2 Crashes At Launch

I've just attemtped to install 1.2 and it crashed On Launch. See screenshot



Any ideas on why this happens?

I am using Win Vista Ultimate.

The recommended version for Vista and Windows 7 is 1.3.12.

A vendor advised using 1.2 as show in this screen shot below to accomplish a wav conversion suitable for a phone system. However the first box shown in the tutorial is not in the newer version of Audacity. Is there another way to accomplish this?

Exporting to other formats is even easier with 1.3.12.

1) import your audio file into audacity
2) from the file menu select "Export..."
3) a window will pop asking the name and destination of the exported file
4) at the lower right of that window from the drop-down menu select "WAV (Microsoft) signed 16 bit PCM"
5) select the folder where you want to export to and type the new name for you file and click "Save"

Sorry about that, but the recommended version for Vista is Audacity 1.3.12
Audacity 1.2.x is known to have problems on modern hardware and modern operating systems, but all development and bug fixing on the 1.2.x series ended several years ago. Audacity 1.2.x will become officially obsolete when Audacity 2.0 (the successor of 1.3.x) is released, which will hopefully not be too long now.

However I need a file in this format.

First set the "Project rate" to 8000 Hz (bottom left corner of the main Audacity window,
then select the format as "Other uncompressed files" in the Export dialogue (File menu > Export)
then click on the "Options" button and select "WAV" as the header and "U-Law" as the encoding.

Upgrading probably will solve the problems, but re-installing will probably do nothing to help. If an installation gets messed up it is invariably the "Preferences" that are messed up. For Audacity 1.2.x these are stored in the Windows Registry. For Audacity 1.3.x they are stored in a file called "audacity.cfg". For all version, the Preferences are not overwritten when reinstalling. (from all of the posts that I've read on this forum I have yet to see one case where reinstalling Audacity solved a problem).
