Everything is being recorded, not just the cassette.

Cool, so at least that bit's working - now you just need some recording volume.
There is probably a volume control near the top of the Audacity window, but it may well be greyed out. Could you just check and see if there is a recording level slider showing, and whether it is greyed out (not available) or otherwise.

I am recording via USB.

does not mean that the built in mike in a laptop is not recording

that is the only way to get the room noise

Now that you have switched the Audacity input to USB, the "room sounds" should have disappeared.

Click the Windows Start button > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound (if you're using "Classic View" there's a direct link to "Sound" in the Control Panel), then click on the "Recording" tab.
You should see something similar to this:


It is common on Vista and 7 that not all recording inputs are automatically enabled in the Recording tab. This means they are invisible in that tab, and also invisible to recording applications like Audacity. So you need to make them visible.

Right-click anywhere inside the Recording tab and choose "Show disabled devices" then right-click again and check "Show Disconnected Devices"
Then Right click on the USB device and ensure that is "Enabled", then "Set as Default Device".

When you have done that, click on "Properties" then the "Levels" tab and ensure the volume slider is turned up.

Restart Audacity, check that "USB" is still selected as the Recording device and you should then be able to get a signal into Audacity from the USB input.

Thanks for your help so far guys, everything is working fine now. All I want to know now is, how do I transfer the recorded music to Windows Media Player, so I can burn it to CD. ( I know how to do that. )

i try not to use wmp
but
i think this works

if you export as a wav file from audacity

then click on that file wherever you saved it
wmp should open it
if that is your default
else
open wmp
and drag the file onto that window

burning is another issue

i always just use the roxio/nero that comes with the pc to burn cds

If you have audacity preferences set to 44100, 16-bit Stereo, Export your music as [WAV (Microsoft) Signed 16-bit PCM].

Those files should drag directly into Windows Media Player.

Most people like to chop up their performance into individual songs.

You know what, nevermind, I give up. This is all just too confusing. All I wanted to do was transfer all of these christian teaching tapes I have to mp3s. But now it looks like I'm just going to have to forget and throw them away. This was a complete waste of my mother's money, and I'm livid. goodbye.
