Doesn't make much sense unless there was a conflict with a duplicate version of Freeverb - did it only appear once in the Audacity menu?

This may be because GVerb is designed to be applied to a duplicate of the track then mixed with the "dry" (unmodified) original track. Have you read the GVerb article on our WIki?
