recording my bass guitar need help!!

Post by Gidzkun » Mon Nov 15, 2010 2:37 am

ok, so I've bought a Behringer UCA202 audio interface.. I'm a noob when it comes to recording so I bought a cheap one, I have a cheap headset and the sound card of my computer is built in.

comp specs is:
dual core 2.20GHZ
2 GB RAM
64 bit OS
I started recording my bass guitar while jamming with my favorite song that I played using audacity, but after recording there's a loud static noise (sounds like a television with no signal). I tried everything: noise removal, bass boost, amplify, low pass filter etc etc. I already played with the preferences but still no luck, sounds horrible! what's the problem?? I thought i was too near from my computer and so I moved far away but still the noise is there, I played with the volume controls of the computer and the audio interface but still fail.

can anybody tell me what's wrong?? I'd really appreciate it! thanks guys!

I have a Mac, a Windows PC, and a linux machine that can all do that.

One of our tricks when we search for damage is to simplify the machine as far as possible. Turn down the playback services, deselect "Play Track while Recording New Ones." Unplug the headphones.

Just run the guitar plugged via an adapter cable into the Line-In of the UCA 202. Select the UCA202 in Windows/Mac/Linux preferences and in Audacity preferences. Restart audacity and see if you can record your guitar at all. Forget listening. Look for the bouncing red meter and blue waves on the timeline.

Just for form, how, exactly did you adapt your guitar pickup 1/4" plug to the UCA202? You can mess it up. The guitar is mono and the UCA202 is stereo.

ok I've turned down the playback preferences and deselect "the play track while recording new ones",

my question is I'n not sure about the windows preferences:
I dont's see any UCA202 behringer (sorry noob question) are you familiar with the name of the audio interface if i looked it up in the windows preferences..??

I unplug the heaphones and started playing withoutlistening but I can't record there;s no timeline.. I played with the audacity preferneces but sometimes I get an error. probably I selecting the wrong playback device and the wrong recording device.

Again for a minute, forget the playback systems. That just confuses the issue.

When you plug your UCA202 in, the computer should think about it for a minute and then the UCA or a USB Chip Number you've never seen before will show up in the recording panels for selection. If you can't get that far, the UCA may be broken. Try a different USB connection. Try another computer -- a friend's or your mom's. Is the green light on top on?

Audacity is a complete slave to the computer it's running on. If Windows doesn't see your hardware or external sound cards, that's the ball game.

If you are looking at "recording devices" (see picture below) and don't see your "USB" thing listed try this to make it appear on the list ...
Right-click anywhere inside the Recording tab and choose "Show disabled devices" then right-click again and check "Show Disconnected Devices"
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Mixer ... trol_Panel
disable all recording devices except the one you want to use.jpg

If you have left one (or more) of the other recording devices on/enabled/available its output (white noise) will be recorded with your guitar giving the de-tuned TV noise you mentioned in your first post.
