Crashed audacity 1.3.12 beta, cant recover the project

Post by smrki » Thu Nov 11, 2010 4:09 pm

Gotta problem with space on hard disk, I guess this is the cause (only 2GB free). Tried to restore but the audacity file project has only a flat line instead of a wave form. The interesting thing is that the recording has some 55mb like it has the file but I cant open it?
Anyway, can I save my work or am did I lose my stuff permanently?

2GB should be enough...

What has 55mb?

The recording which was edited and exported. So I have this recovery version of the file and it is 500 MB in size, but when I open it I see only a flat line (some 55 min of audio). I have tried to export this file in a hope it would somehow work when exported to mp3 format. This file is 55 MB big, but it still has only a flat line instead of wave form. Loks like I have the file but instead of the recording I can see only a silent, flat line.

If it's a flat silent line on audacity, then it will still be all silent if you export it whatever the format is...

I'm afraid your show might be lost for good :(

As a good practice always save your show right after you finish recording it... It's also advisable to export as wav (or flac) as a backup.

Thanks,
it seems that for me it is not good enough to relay on auto saving, but I must always manually backup work in progress. It was literally the last click on the edited podcasts when the audacity crashed ( after a full day of working on it).

Not just for you - it's something we all should do regularly (but many of us fail to). I certainly wouldn't rely on autosave for a full day's work with any s/w package - not just Audacty, the same goes for Word, Excel, Photoshop etc.

If you do make intermediate saves during a day's work I would suggest storing them in (slightly) different filenames - that way you can always go back to an intermediate version. It's also seen as good practise to make a save or export a WAV (or both) immediately after raw capture and before editing.
