Noise removal

What are the standard settings for noise removal,ie; Noise reduction(db).................freq smoothing(hz)......................attack/decay time(sec).

And what is the best setting for removing static from a recording?

The default settings are:

0.15

The optimum settings depend on how much noise, what sort of noise and what the other sounds are, but the most important setting is the first (Noise Reduction dB).
The Noise Removal effect in Audacity 1.3.x only removes noise from "silent" sections (where there is only noise). There is very little effect on sections that have other sounds.
If you set Noise Reduction (dB) too high you will hear bubbly metallic sounds. If it is set too low there will be more noise than necessary left over.
Don't expect miracles - Noise Removal works best when the noise that is being removed is constant and low level.

Newby question.....Beta 1.3.12 with Win7 64-bit. When I activate Noise Removal, I get the standard window. I select a small part of my track, then hit the "Get Noise Profile" button, and the dialogue box disappears. I have to go back to the Effects menu drop-down, select Noise Removal again to get back to the noise removal window, then select the track, make removal settings and click OK. The result is less than appealing even with the dB settings moderately low.

The question is...should this be happening? In video tutorials, watching the same process, the Noise Removal window does NOT disappear when the noise profile button is clicked. Is this an issue in the beta?

Yes it should be happening. To use the Noise Removal effect in Audacity you have to select it twice - once to make a "profile" of the noise,(then the Noise Removal window closes), then you need to select Noise Removal a second time to "apply" the noise reduction.
Noise Removal is a very difficult effect and it's not right yet, though there is a new version which will be in the next Audacity release and that version is a bit better.

Thanks for the information....at least I'm doing the correct thing in the correct order. The effect is being applied. Will look forward to the next iteration and it's improvements!
