Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

No, because that's not a sound file.

Audacity does not Save sound files. To get a sound file of your show, you have to Export one. One of the options in the Export dialog is AIFF, WAV... and MP3, if you installed the lame software correctly.

MP3, or MPEG1, Layer 3 sound is a licensed format from Fraunhofer Gesellschaft. Free Audacity can not offer it built-in because then it wouldn't be free any more.

No, we are unable to convert that file because it is only an Audacity Project file and does not contain any audio data. The audio data may still be on your computer in a file called "mac dre cut.wav_data".
See here for an explanation of how Audacity handles data: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/File_Management_Tips

If you are unable to get Lame to work, you could Export an audio file from the Audacity Project as a WAV file, then use any MP3 encoder to convert it to an MP3.
