All I need to do is just convert the .au files to .wav

And I can't find a program that will actually do it except some $50 program. I'm not really wanting to pay it (because as a young american I am very poor) I just need to convert, I've used Ubuntu's SoundKonverter and Soundconvert, I can't figure out Sox because there seems to be no bother in walking newbie's to command line through the process. I just want to make the files converted, can anyone please help me? It's been over a week in trying to make this work. We have a podcast, had a guest on, and we can't rerecord.

If you are referring to the .au files that Audacity creates (as part of an Audacity Project), you just need to Export (File menu).

If you really want to do that... and if you want to make it on the command line... Have you tried mplayer/mencoder?
Include as much details as you can in your post (Audacity version, Operating System, Equipment used, etc).
Please post your question in the appropriate forum (regarding audacity version and operating system).
