Audacity saved files not numbered like most, can't compile

Post by oansun » Fri Sep 03, 2010 8:20 pm

These are what my files look like. I'm running ubuntu 10.04, audacity 1.3. I saved the session, like i should. Then when I opened it, it gave an error saying "nothing in file" so I still have all the separated files. I have to post this episode tonight, and have no way of getting the files. Audacity Recovery won't read it, audacity_recovery command line just skips the files because they don't have regular numbers. I have no idea what to do, anyone help?

Ok, so I've renamed everything, but I now can't get any recovery utility to work on ubuntu. can someone give me a step by step instruction page on how to install recovery in utility, I have so many errors I think I'm missing something. Any help would be massively appreciated!

Sorry to keep "spamming" here but I keep getting info to share. While trying recovery through WINE, I got this as the error log. Can anyone explain?

Very few of us have used the recovery tools - Personally if I get a crash and it's not automatically recovered on the next launch of Audacity I cut my losses and go back to the previous back-up copy (or if I don't have a backup I start again). The information that we do have on crash recovery is here: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/CrashRecovery

BTW, for important original recordings, the first thing that I do is to Export the recording as a WAV file. WAV files are simple and reliable, which makes them well suited as emergency backups.

In 1.3 the recovery mechanism normally works auto-magically - I figure that if it is broken sufficiently that Auto-recovery doesn't work then you are probably stuffed - and then, as Steve says, it's back to re-recording.

It certianly does work when it can; I've had to restore projects (on Win XP admittedly) when the Timer Record won't stop and I had to crash out - I just restarted Audacity and it has always restored ok.

You haven't renamed any of the files or moved/changed the directory they sit in have you? The AUP file (which holds the recipe for how to string together all the little AU files of audio clips) is quite fussy about stuff like that.

The 1.3/2.0 manual has a little to say on recovery, but not much (because it's supposed to be auto-magic) - See: http://manual.audacityteam.org/index.ph ... es#crashed
and: http://manual.audacityteam.org/index.php?title=Recovery

The Wiki has more to say, but that's because it's also covering 1.2 where it was not automatic ad had to be a more hand-on mandraulic process- see: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/CrashRecovery

Thanks for helping guys, I appreciate it. The main issue I'm having is this though, the AUP is broken, all the files are saved in a folder from the previous save. The AUP file has no gui, so I can't see or string together anything, We have 4 hours or recording, its all there, I'm just avoiding doing it all by "hand", because that is majorly ridiculous. Rerecording is not an option unfortunately. The 10 second clips are there, I just need them together. The "recovery" program does not support .au from 1.3 if I am guessing correctly. Any other suggestions? I appreciate it guys.

ok so, I have all my files in done directory and also in their original place. On the crash recovery page that I have tried everything on, I see a perl script to run with Sox to compile them all. Is this something I can do, I have zero experience with these programs, does anyone else?

I'm still trying to understand how you got into that mess...

Can you please give more details on how you got to that situation?

From the beginning... you had your show in audacity then you selected "save project" from the file menu, that saved it to the harddisk, then you closed audacity, then you opened audacity again (meanwhile you didn't touch the aup file or any other of the files in the project, did you?) and opened the project and it showed you no tracks? Did it give you any error message? There was any crash during this process?

What happens now when you open that .aup file in audacity?

Do you still have the original .aup file and original data directory with all the tiny au files in their original names?
Include as much details as you can in your post (Audacity version, Operating System, Equipment used, etc).
Please post your question in the appropriate forum (regarding audacity version and operating system).
