MP3 Year tag
On Ubuntu (and quite possibly on Linux generally), the Year tag in MP3s exported from Audacity is not seen by player applications. This happens because we use the deprecated TYER frame for year for backwards compatibility with Windows applications that still use it. How is the situation on Mac? Does iTunes and GarageBand see the Audacity Year tag?

Re: MP3 Year tag
Rather than me guessing what to do at both ends of this, can you create a short MP3 that you without question post a bogus year tag like 1942? I'll shop it around players and see which ones are correct.

Re: MP3 Year tag
OK, I attached an MP3 created in Audacity 1.3.13 on Windows 7 with the following tags:kozikowski wrote:Rather than me guessing what to do at both ends of this, can you create a short MP3 that you without question post a bogus year tag like 1942? Artist Name: Pluck
Track Title: Plucky
Album Title: Single
Track Number: 1
Year: 1942
Genre: Alternative
Comments: Boring
Note that any four characters in "year" are valid as far as I know. I'd be much more interested though in whether Mac apps see those tags in an MP3 created by Audacity on Mac. So try the same tags if you wish, though all I was possibly going to change myself was the frame for year (unless Mac apps can see the year tag correctly now with it set to "TYER").

First and obvious choice is Quicktime Player. More as I get a minute. Koz

Re: MP3 Year tag
Thanks. Is that the MP3 I created in Win 7 or one you created on Mac? I see the same three tags only in QuickTime for Windows (not the PRO version) using the Win 7 MP3. Does QuickTime display more than Artist, Album and Comments anyway?kozikowski wrote:First and obvious choice is Quicktime Player. More as I get a minute. Koz

I thought so. iTunes 9 is a good deal more forthcoming.

And again. VLC just reached into QuickTime and pulled out the same data.

Re: MP3 Year tag
OK Koz, thanks. Looks like only Linux needs to be changed.
