Audacity Could not open MP3 encoding library.

Post by dsmithh » Sat Aug 21, 2010 5:58 pm

Using MAC OS 10.6.4 and Audacity 1.3.12, I have recorded small snippets of audio to learn how to save files as MP3. Going down the path to export as MP3s, I have been prompted for the LAME encoder many times, and follow the instructions for the step. However, when I think I am done with that, Audacity still responds with a 'Could not open MP3 encoding library' error message. The path for the file is supposed to be /usr/local/lib/audacity/libmp3lame.dylib, so I tried to use the finder to see if the file exists, but no luck. I then went in via terminal, but could not get into the /lib folder - Permission Denied. Don't know the super user password either. So I am not really sure if the library got installed correctly, since I cannot seem to find it! Thanks in advance for any suggestions. I looking forward to digging out my old LPs and getting them into MP3 format.

An update. I was able to set the password for root on my mac, and confirm that the libmp3lame.dylib file is in the correct place: /usr/local/lib/audacity/xxxxx

Workaround: I copied the lame library out from the default installation path (/usr/local/lib/audacity/libmp3lame.dylib) to my folder /Users/dsmithh/libmp3lame.dylib, repointed the Audacity program to that location, am now exporting MP3 files as needed. :)
