Beeping while recording

Post by Maconly » Fri Aug 13, 2010 4:31 pm

I just bought a Alesis MultiMix 4 USB mixer. When I recorded my radio show there was a random beep every 5, 10...15 seconds. Any idea why or how to get ride of it?

Thanks

What's the radio show? You talking into a microphone? Anything else like music or other audio clips? Do you mix internet audio?

Do you podcast live, or make a file, edit it and then post the show?'

Edit two or three seconds of the show with a beep in it and post it here as a forum attachment. See: Upload Attachment on the bottom of these screens.

Do you wear headphones while you're talking? That gets rid of a lot of problems in live captures.

The radio show is on Fresh Start Broadcasting and it is called "That Guy's Mom" An incredible story about a young man who is in prison. We use two mics and nothing else. I make a file in Audacity and then export it to an editor in MP3. I do use a USB head set but I get the beep with or without the headset.

I am uploading a sample. It beeps at the beginning and about 20 seconds into the recording.I am attaching the recording in MP3.

USB glitch? Are you connecting through a USB hub? If so, try connecting directly to a USB port on the computer.

Is the beep on the original recording, or only after you export to MP3?

I also changed the hardware/software playthrough and it did not make a difference

I am plugged in directly and I can hear the beep when recording.

The Alesis has a line output - try plugging that into the line input of your Mac and see if the beeps go away. If the beeps remain, try recording from the line input of your mac with nothing plugged in. If the beeps remain, the problem is in your Mac (likely hardware, but possibly software). If the beeps go away, I hope you can return the Alesis.

Analysis of the beep doesn't suggest anything. There are frequency peaks almost exactly every 1000 Hz up and down the frequency sweep. Something that rich in harmonics suggests oscillation or something becoming profoundly unstable and then recovering.
