Needing help creating dj mix cd.

Post by marts73 » Mon Mar 24, 2008 11:42 am

I'm really bad at anything computer generated. I only just sussed out how to turn cd tracks into MP3. So, now I want to create a mix with Audacity. The individual tracks need to be beat matched and flow with each other. Might be a bit difficult with the old soul tracks but I want to have a go.
At the moment I can only get individual tracks on seperate screens. I want to be able to see the tracks running into each other. I'm not sure if I'm explaining myself properly. I hope you understand.
It was so much easier with two turntables, mixer and a hifi but I'm gonna drag myself into the new world of technology if it kills me!
Thanks in advance.

Firstly - always work with WAV files. Converting to mp3 should be the very last step (and you should still keep a copy as a WAV file in case you want to do any more editing or processing. MP3 always introduces some amount of sound quality loss.

If you have a number of audio files (WAV's or MP3's) on your computer, you can use "File > Import" to get them into Audacity. Alternatively, you could be recording them directly into Audacity. In either case, each track (song) should have its own track in Audacity.

You can then use the "Time Shift Tool" to move each track to the correct location.
Then use the "Envelope Tool" to create a fade-out on one track, and a fade-in of the next track.

When you have it sounding right, "Select All" with Ctrl+A and "Export" as a WAV from the "File" menu.

More detail for each of these steps can be found in the Audacity manual. http://audacityteam.org/manual-1.2/
