Beta Record Problem with Line-in

Post by res » Fri Mar 21, 2008 5:04 am

I am using 1.2.6 without incident. However, have downloaded Beta twice with the same problem.
Recording with line-in runs at about a third of real time hence plays back at about three times real time. This without fiddling with controls or preferences. What have I done wrong?

Do you mean the speed ?
In the Beta version you can control the speed of playback (afspeelsnelheid in Dutch)

Yes, I'm aware I can do that which will give me approximately accurate play back but surely the recording should be made in real-time in the first place as in 1.2.6, Cool Edit and anything else I've tried?

I'm new to all this but is this a bug with Beta?

All I'm trying to do is record vinyl by "line In", clean it up, export it as a Wav file and burn it.

All of this I can do very easily in 1.2.6. Congrats. a great product.

But in Beta, when I hit the record button all seems right until I try to replay. Then it runs fast. About three times faster than normal. Whilst the time bar tells me I've recorded one minute of audio, in fact I've recorded 3 minutes and 6 seconds when replayed through the "Play at speed" button set at 33 and timed by stop watch. What gives?

Further, if I export the WAV file it will not play at the right speed in anything else eg. Windows Media Player.

Now, I have no problems opening a WAV or MP3 file in Beta recorded in another program like Nero. They open and play without problem. It's only "line in" record that seems to behave in this strange way which makes Beta useless for my requirements.

Back to 1.2.6. But if someone's reading this from Audacity or knows where I've gone wrong I'd be very happy to hear.

Thanks to the previous respondent but the problem remains unsolved.

What sample rates and bit settings are you using in 1.3?

Often speed problems are associated with changed sample rates e.g. importing a piece of audio that was sampled at 48kHz when your Audacity is set to 44.1kHz say - but this should not really be your case as you say you are just recording from LP and then editing for cleanup.

I have been using 1.3 for several months now for LP/tape/MD conversion and it has always worked fine. My settings for recording are 44.1kHz, stereo, 32-bit float. For completed projects I export to WAV as 16-bit PCM stereo 44.1kHZ and to MP3 at 192 or 256. The WAVs and MP3s both play fine in iTunes/iPod and the WAVs make good CDs.

BTW: simply downloading Audacity again will never help you - as Audacity retains your user Preferences file, so remembers your previous settings.

Thanks for that response.

I've checked my settings and they are the same as yours.

But, you've put your finger on the main mystery: none of that should affect recording of an analogue line in.

I note with interest your info on multiple downloads. Perhaps I tweaked something when I first downloaded it.

But I can't for the life of me work out what.

Any other suggestions gratefully received. Meanwhile 1.2.6 continues to work perfectly.

Having said that re-installing won't help you - you may instead want to try setting your Audacity 1.3 back to its OOTB default settings. You can do this by deleting the configuration file: you will find this in C:Documents and SettingsusernameApplication DataAudacityaudacity.cfg

If you delete this, the next time you open Audacity it will create a new .cfg file for you.

Note that 1.3 in this respect is very different from 1.2 - in 1.3 it creates a .cfg file for each different audacity user on your pc - in 1.2 the preferences are instead stored in the Windows Registry (a place of dark and mysterious magic ....)

Keep us posted on this one - it is intriguing.

Intriguing, yes, and unfortunately still unresolved. Removing audacity.cfg doesn't make any difference.

Curiouser and curiouser.

Ummm.... I'm having what sounds like exactly the same problem.

The wife bought me a "turntable box" for Fathers' Day - so I could play all my old LP's. First problem was that it just had crappy little speakers (built in) and second problem was that it had no output jacks. So, I opened it up, created a custom "Line-In" cable [actually a line out] that I can plug into the PC. Reiteration: soldered wires to Right, Left, & Grounds in the turntable box, which plugs into the PC.

Downloaded Audacity and thought I was in business.

What I'm getting is a recording that plays at almost 3 times the speed of the tracks I played on the turntable. Seriously, Pink Floyd should not sound like Alvin & the Chipmunks!!! If I change the "Play-at-speed" down to .31475 it actually sounds right. Yes, I tinkered with it down to 5 digits. :-/

If the consensus is that I should download an earlier version, that's what I'll do. But, I usually like to go with the latest, greatest version. Anyway, all your assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Thank,
Max.

"Almost 3x the speed" seems to be a new phenomena - which (exact) version is this with? Audacity 1.3.5? Windows XP? Vista?
