Best Way To Remaster Old Audio?

Post by Son of Spam » Tue Mar 18, 2008 2:44 am

I have a number of song files in .mp3 format (so right there..."audiophile-quality" is thrown out). They're old and the sound quality is questionable -- thin...somewhat trebly at times.

How can I remaster them using Audacity, to that they at least sound "fatter" and cleaner? Purposeful distortion on the songs is NOT an issue...I likes my music somewhat grungy at times.

But sometimes these are songs taken straight from their original 45's.

What's the best way to remaster old audio?

The "Best" way is to go back to the original 45's and record them directly into Audacity.
If you "must" use the mp3's, then import the mp3 into Audacity and use the "Equaliser" effect to adjust the tone to what sounds best to you. There are some other effects that may give a subjective improvement, but for "thin" sounding recordings, the Equalisation effect is likely to give the main improvements.
