Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Recovering file- I can't even find the "au" things

Post by Rickenbacker » Sat Jul 17, 2010 11:50 pm

I checked this page for help 1st :
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php? ... shRecovery

I went to "Edit/ Preferences/ Directories" tab, & did see an 'audacity_temp" file address/ location. But after trying some Audacity recovery program I downloaded, it asked me to make a location or something, so I did, it then asked me to restart Audacity. I did- but then the temp location address was gone. :?

Now what?

The crash recovery program for Windows is http://www.mesw.de/audacity/recovery/ or http://2by2.info/aud_recover-1.1.1.zip. The tool from mesw.de will ask you to specify the location of the .au files. I have never known those tools ask for Audacity to be restarted. Restarting Audacity 1.2 would not create a problem even if you did so before starting the recovery, as long as you told it not to delete temporary files. If you are actually using Audacity Beta 1.3, the temp files are deleted after you exit Audacity, as the Crash Recovery page states.

The recovery files will be created in the directory you specified in the crash recovery tool and will not be deleted by Audacity. Their names are in the form recovery_blockx_channely.wav, where "x" is the recovery block number and "y" is the channel number (for stereo, "1" for left and "2" for right channel).

Thanks, Gale.

The 1st link you gave is the site I went to. I guess me being a novice w/ this tool doesn't help matters. I may've typed the wrong thing in. I don't know. I've never used it. I thought it'd be more straightforward. But I do know I never asked it to delete my file, so I'm *assuming* it's still around somewhere. I hope.

...Ok, Win. Search found em, but I'm not sure now how to put it back in Audacity. I highlighted all the "b00##s" then right-clicked to try opening with Audacity. Didn't work. =/

Try opening Audacity, then from the "Project" menu select "Import Audio". Navigate to the folder where the .au files are located, select the files that you want to import and click the "Open" button.

Thanks, Steve

I opened Audacity, went to project/ Import Audio/ found my files, highlighted them & hit open. Then it asked me which program I wanted to open it with. I browsed & found & chose Audacity, then it just took me right back to the "Open With" dialog box. =/

At that point a window should open for selecting the files that you want to open - You selected the files in that window, not some other window?

No, from there, it took me to a window called "Select one or more audio files". But the files I needed were not there. I had to use the "look in" field's little black arrow to eventually get to them.

This is making less and less sense. :?

So you clicked on the "Look in" arrow, navigated to the folder where the .au files were, selected some of the .au files, clicked the "Open" button and it asked you which program to open them with?

Which version of Windows are you using?
