Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Editing mp3 songs with Audacity

Post by spawnxshadowx » Fri Mar 07, 2008 9:07 pm

I do not know if I have 1.3x unstable audacity. This is why I made a post on the other one (don' know the difference).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I cut the end of an mp3 song>Original mp3 song had 192 kbps>edited mp3 song also has 192 kbps (I changed the settings)>I noticed that everything is the same, except the file size and the length of the song(only cause I edited it)>BUT I NOTICED THAT under Audio Properties for AUDIO QUALITY, Original mp3= Medium (Lossy) and Edited mp3= High (Lossy). WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? Does this mean that they do not sound the same? Which one sounds better? Or does it mean that the one with high lossy has a higher volume? What do I have to change in Audacity so the edited one is exported with a medium lossy as the original one?
And Also--------------------------------

I exported the song as 192 kbps... I understand that if a song has 192 kbps, that I'm not supposed to export it anymore than 192 because it's not going to change the quality of the original mp3 song. Does my edited song really have 192kbps like the original one??? Any way to prove it?

Thanks

oh yeah, I already checked wikipedia about lossy, but wasn't really able to understand it. All I understood from three example pictures there is that high lossy picture was blurry compared to the low lossy.

Click on "Help" and select "About Audacity" - that will tell you which version you have.
It's a bit tricky answering your next question without knowing which version you are using.

Because mp3 is a "lossy" format, decoding it and encoding it again will produce some degree of audio quality loss, but it may not be noticeable (in which case it doesn't matter).
If you right click on the file and select "Properties", then select the "Advanced" section, Windows will report some information about the file format. Most media players will also report the bit rate (for CBR), but in the case of VBR (Variable Bit Rate) they often get it wrong.
