Correct version of lame ???
Audacity 1.3.12-beta
Windows XP SP3
I installed lame - in the default location - from the download page recommended in the program AND in the wiki:
http://lame.buanzo.com.ar/
That version of lame is 3.98.
When I try to export to MP3, audacity asks for the location of lame. When I let it know where to find lame, audacity throws the following error:
You are linking to lame_enc.dll v3.98.
This version is not compatible with Audacity 1.3.12.
Please download the latest version of the LAME MP3 library.
So what is the correct version of lame and where do I get it?

http://audacityteam.org/download/beta_windows
has this link:
http://audacityteam.org/help/faq?s=inst ... m=lame-mp3 LAME MP3 encoder allows audacity to export MP3 files
That page has this link:

And that gets me the same file - the one that doesn't work.
What am I missing here?

I've moved and merged these topics so that all replies will come to the same place.
You've been rather unlucky - this is usually really easy, but hopefully these instructions will get you going.
I generally use the ZIP version that is on that page ( libmp3lame-win-3.98.2.zip )
Download the ZIP file and extract the contents into your Audacity program folder.
It sounds like you are downloading the correct, but Audacity is finding a different version on your computer.
Do a search of your computer for any other versions of lame and if found, temporarily rename them.
Then find the audacity.cfg file ( Documents and Settings<user name>Application DataAudacityaudacity.cfg )
Open audacity.cfg in NotePad and find the following lines:
Delete those two lines and save the file.
Restart Audacity and go to "Edit menu > Preferences > Libraries"
If Lame is not automatically detected, click on the "Locate" button in the "Lame" section and navigate to the Audacity program folder and Lame should now be recognised.

[SOLVED] Correct version of lame for 1.3.12-beta ??
That fixed it. Thank you.
Re: Correct version of lame for 1.3.12-beta ??
Hello,
Thank you so much for the solutions provided.
I had the same problem, but thought I should clarify for people like me who were still confused by the thread and who have a different version of windows.
The lame v3.98.4 will not work with the Audacity beta 1.3.12 even if you follow the process listed above. I tried it.
I did download and unzip the lame v3.98.2 as instructed along with the audacity.cfg modification and renaming other lame_enc.dlls temporarily.
In Win7, I found the audacity.cfg file in C:usersusernameappdataroamingaudacity.
By the way, in order to get there I had to go to windows explorer and click on toolsfolder optionsviewand select the show hidden files and folders box. Then the appdata folder appeared.
The file export to MP3 worked as it should. Yippppeee.
I returned my latest version lame_enc.dlls to their original name [because I use other software that relies on them].
After restarting the computer, I retested the file export to MP3. Yeah, it worked.
I assume that my other programs utilizing the newer lame encoder version will still function.
I hope this additional information helps. Take care.
My laptop:
Win 7 64 bit Ultimate
Media Monkey Gold
WinAmp Pro
Ableton 8.2
Vegas 10

Re: Correct version of lame for 1.3.12-beta ??
I can't exacty find those two lines to delete. I did find the audacity.cfg file exactly where it was supposed to be though. Any clue? I still i have warning message when i try to locate the lame_enc.dll on audacity. Then find the audacity.cfg file ( Documents and Settings<user name>Application DataAudacityaudacity.cfg )
Open audacity.cfg in NotePad and find the following lines:
Code: Select all
[MP3]
MP3LibPath=
Delete those two lines and save the file.
Re: Correct version of lame for 1.3.12-beta ??
If you are 100% sure that the line
[MP3]
does not exist in audacity.cfg, then ignore that step.
Have you downloaded the ZIP file from the web page indicated?
Have you "extracted" the contents of the ZIP file?
What files did that produce and where did you put them?

Yes! It works now! Haha I didn't download from that webpage last night because the page, http://lame.buanzo.com.ar/ was down, but now it isn't. Last night i searched for another lame 3.98.2 zip file which only had the lame_enc.dll and another different file called lame_enc.ini. Thank you so much!Have you downloaded the ZIP file from the web page indicated?
