I had to reinstall windows and all of my software, including Audacity ® 1.3.12-beta (Unicode) with Lame for Audacity. Now it will not write mp3s, puts up a Message Box "Locate Lame" "Audacity needs the file lame_enc.dll to create MP3s"; but the window shows that the dll is in its proper location.
Tried running lame.exe in a dos box, got
F:Program FilesLame for Audacity>lame -V0 --lowpass 19.7 "Telemann-RecorderCon
certo.wav" "Telemann-RecorderConcerto.mp3"
The system cannot execute the specified program.
Ran Dependency Walker on lame.exe; it didn't flag any modules but produced the message
Error: The Side-by-Side configuration information for "f:program fileslame for audacityLAME.EXE" contains errors. This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem (14001).
Reinstalled, made no difference.
Downloaded fresh copy of Lame for Audacity and installed it; no difference.
Downloaded 3 flavors of Lame; lame3.99.a10.zip, lame3.98.4-vc6.zip and lame3.98.4.zip. I have an old computer so I first tried lame.exe from lame3.98.4-vc6.zip in a dos box, worked fine.
Put that lame.exe in place of lame.exe in Lame for Audacity and tried Audacity again. It produced the same "Locate Lame" etc.
As it used to work before the system got destroyed I think the problem must be some missing dll that audacity calls to interact with lame. I have also reinstalled Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86), whose absence caused this problem before, but no luck this time
won't write mp3, can't find lame

Re: won't write mp3, can't find lame
Did you get the lame software from the web site associated with the version of Audacity you downloaded? One of the Audacity versions took a specially tuned lame for best results.
Audacity doesn't necessarily like running on networks or complex machines. It's a really simple program (particularly in the 1.2 version) and likes really simple computers. Your whole posting screams Not Simple!
You might try blowing it all away and installing Audacity 1.3.12. Many of us consider 1.3.12 the only version or series that's useful. It has very much updated tools and filters and is aware of many more operating systems than 1.2 was (although it still won't run on a network).

Re: won't write mp3, can't find lame
I'm sorry, I do this every time. I post to this forum because that's what comes up when you click for Windows. I am using 1.3.12, I'll transfer the original post to that forum and consider this one closed.
